Humanity seems to be divided into two categories: those who are sensitive to fonts and those who don’t give a damn. As a proud member of the former group I just cannot stand ugly or fuzzy fonts. Linux distributions have so far always been constant in that respect: looking at a desktop after a fresh install has always hurt my eyes. First thing I do is grab my fontconfig files from dropbox, install them and restart X.

Not this time: Ubuntu 10.10 comes for the first time with a dedicated font called quite simply Ubuntu, and this one is a beauty. The font has been ordered specifically by Ubuntu for its desktops and can be used freely for whatever you want (check the license though).

My default desktop font config now sports:

Go get them and try them.
